Match 6 (6th scheduled), 2011: 15 May

Sandon Strollers CC vs Pimlico Strollers CC

Captain's innings secures win over Sandon at Walkern
posted: May 15, 2011

In today's second ever clash with our namesakes the Sandon Strollers, it was us that won the spoils and reclaimed 'the right to wear the badge'. On an unseasonally chilly afternoon in wildest Walkern, Spencer again called correctly and put Sandon into bat.

After a solid start of 40 without loss, James made the vital first breakthrough, clean bowling Sandon's opener, Jenkins and from then on wickets fell with frequency including a stunning 'one stump' run out from Spencer and some miserly bowling from Rob. But it was again Graeme who was the pick of the attack, collecting yet another excellent three for from his probing medium pace. Sandon's middle order however managed to cash in on some looser bowling later in the innings and, closing on 179-8, the game remained nicely poised.

In response, our openers hit the ground running scoring at 7 an over until, with the score on 35, Gav unluckily top edged a pull shot to backward square leg. Graeme, joined by Spencer, continued to push on and was looking in good nick until he scooped one up to mid off who, after several juggles, managed to hang on to the catch. Matt, in next, saw his stumps tumble on his first ball but Spencer, joined now by Tim, had his mind set and began to take full advantage of the sloping pitch with boundary after boundary. The hundred was reached in the sixteenth over and the skipper hit the accelerator, going aerial as his powered effortlessly to his fifty. Scoring was stemmed slightly as Sandon's Eggington bowled a better line but Tim farmed the strike wisely and, from the far end, Spencer lofted three supreme sixes (narrowly avoiding his grandad's parked car!).

In the 30th over we crossed the winning line with Spencer hitting another fine straight drive to secure a personal best 85 not out - truly a captain's innings in every sense - and a valuable third victory of the season. Well done to all involved!
