Strollers come up short in season opener against The Village
posted: April 16, 2012
Yesterday saw the traditional season curtain raiser against The Village held this year held at a sunny but arctic North Middlesex CC. The Villagers won the toss and batted first on the artificial track and despite a probing spell from Spencer and a stunning low diving catch in the covers from Rocky Bisht — making a very welcome return to the side after almost 5 years — some wayward bowling from the Strollers attack cost us dear and allowed the oppo to pile on a massive 274 from their 35 overs (including a magnificent 103 not out from Harty)... a target that looked almost certainly beyond us.
However, in reply, the Strollers openers managed to give us something to cheer about as they got our innings off to a flyer... easily matching the required 8 per over — Gav thumping a lusty 34 before holing out to Lucarotti and Spencer, batting beautifully from the start, was hugely unlucky to fall agonisingly short of a ton when he was caught and bowled for 95. In the end the Strollers batsmen managed to reach a very respectable 220-6 but the 50 run margin of defeat could not disguise a rather lacklustre bowling display earlier in the day that ultimately cost us the match. But with a few positives to take to from the game we can look forward to better performances to come!
